Christmas in Cayucos Is One Weekend Again This Year, and Wonderland Walk Starts an Hour Earlier

November 5, 2026

Christmas in Cayucos happens on Friday, December 11 and Saturday, December 12 this year. The tree lighting is Friday at 5 p.m. at D Street and Ocean Avenue. The free Wonderland Walk on Ocean Avenue runs Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. That 3 p.m. start is the newest change in an event that has been moving since 2023. Over that time it has shrunk from two weekends to one and has started earlier in the day.

Three Decembers, three different schedules

Families who have done Christmas in Cayucos for a while will remember when it took two weekends. Here is how the schedule has changed since 2023.

Year Tree lighting Downtown shopping evening Time between them
2023 Sunday, Dec. 3, 6 p.m. Christmas Open House, Saturday, Dec. 9, 5 to 8 p.m. Six days
2024 Sunday, Dec. 8, 5 p.m. Wonderland Walk, Saturday, Dec. 14, 4 to 7 p.m. Six days
2025 Friday, Dec. 12, 5 p.m. Wonderland Walk, Saturday, Dec. 13, 4 to 7 p.m. The next day
2026 Friday, Dec. 11, 5 p.m. Wonderland Walk, Saturday, Dec. 12, 3 to 6 p.m. The next day

The six-day gap held through 2024. In 2025 the tree lighting moved from a Sunday evening to the Friday right before the Walk, and the two events have run back to back since. In 2023 the shopping evening was called the Christmas Open House. By 2024 it was the Wonderland Walk.

The shopping evening's hours have moved up in two steps. The 2023 Open House ran 5 to 8 p.m. The Walk ran 4 to 7 p.m. in 2024 and 2025. This year it is 3 to 6 p.m. In three seasons the downtown evening has moved two hours earlier.

The one-weekend format started in 2025. The Estero Bay News issue of November 20, 2025 listed that year's tree lighting for Friday, Dec. 12 and the Walk for Saturday, Dec. 13. KSBY previewed the same Friday-Saturday pairing on December 11, 2025. So 2026 is the second year of the format, and the earlier Walk hours are what's new this time. The Cayucos Chamber of Commerce says it built the single weekend "knowing families are busy." Visit SLO CAL's 2026 holiday guide, published October 19, also lists the Walk at 3 to 6 p.m.

Friday at D Street, 5 p.m.

The tree lighting stays at 5 p.m., but this year it falls on the second Friday of December, not a Sunday like 2023 and 2024. The Chamber's program for December 11 lists:

  • Live music from the White Caps
  • Carolers from Cayucos Community Church
  • The lighting of the tree
  • Santa and Mrs. Claus arriving on fire engines
  • Visits and photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus

The event is at the community tree on the corner of D Street and Ocean Avenue. The Chamber also promises warm refreshments. In 2024 the tree lighting offered cookies and cider.

Saturday on Ocean Avenue, now 3 to 6 p.m.

The Walk works the same way it has since 2024. Ocean Avenue businesses stay open with holiday decorations and seasonal specials. Santa and Mrs. Claus greet children at their holiday home. The Chamber's 2026 page lists free horse-drawn carriage rides, a kids' craft workshop and a snow-play area. Refreshments come from the Cayucos Lioness Club. The 2024 version had the same core lineup: a craft tent, carriage and wagon rides, and a real-snow play pile.

Because the Walk is an hour earlier, it now starts in mid-afternoon. With a 3 p.m. start, families can do the snow pile and the carriage ride and still be home for dinner. Parents with young children may find that more practical than last year's 7 p.m. finish.

The carriage and the snow are not free to provide. The Chamber sells Christmas in Cayucos sponsorships, and its sponsor page says that money pays for the horse-drawn carriage, the snow and other holiday activities. The Chamber hosts the weekend with Cayucos Rotary and local merchants.

One of the newer storefronts on the street is Dot's Spot Coffee & Treats at 14 N. Ocean Ave. #122. It held its grand opening on July 14, as reported by The Tribune. Co-owners Molly, Mike and Dotty Humphrey serve Joebella coffee and MamaBirds Bakery items.

When the Walk ends, the Shoreline Inn lights come on

The new hours line up with another December fixture in town. The Shoreline Inn's light display, with more than 25,000 lights on the hotel and its lawn, runs nightly from 6 to 11:30 p.m., according to Visit SLO CAL. In past years the Walk ran until 7 p.m., overlapping the lights by an hour. This year it ends at 6, just as the display turns on. Families can shop Ocean Avenue in the afternoon, then see the lights afterward without leaving early.

The display runs from November 26 through January 6, and it's free. November 26 is Thanksgiving, two weeks from today. That means the Inn is lit for more than two weeks before the town tree goes on December 11.

The whole season on one calendar

With the downtown events down to one weekend, the Cayucos holiday season now has four fixed dates:

  1. Thursday, November 26, Thanksgiving. The Shoreline Inn display lights up and runs nightly from 6 to 11:30 p.m. through January 6.
  2. Friday, December 11, 5 p.m. Tree lighting at D Street and Ocean Avenue.
  3. Saturday, December 12, 3 to 6 p.m. Wonderland Walk on Ocean Avenue.
  4. Friday, January 1, 2027, noon. The 46th Carlin Soulé Memorial Polar Bear Dip at Cayucos State Beach. The event listing runs from noon to 2 p.m., and swimmers go in at noon.

The Polar Bear Dip has been part of New Year's in Cayucos far longer than the current holiday schedule, and the Chamber has a dedicated page for it. A year ago the Estero Bay News called it "the wildest local Holiday event" in its roundup.

If you are planning the season, the main thing to remember is the change since 2023. The town's December events used to take up two weekends. Now they fit into one Friday evening and one Saturday afternoon, and this year's Saturday ends at 6 p.m. For questions about the program, the Chamber lists its phone number as (805) 995-1200 on its event materials.

If you own a Cayucos vacation rental, this year's calendar gives you clear dates to plan around: Thanksgiving week when the lights go up, the December 11 and 12 weekend, and New Year's Day at the beach. Franklin Real Estate & Rentals manages vacation rentals and long-term rentals along this stretch of coast. We can help you set a guest schedule and maintenance plan around those dates, or give you a clear valuation if you're thinking about the year ahead. Request a home valuation and we'll start there.
